“Thank you to HEHG and Nora, Arden, and Sarah Umles for the #virtualstudiovisit! Your ideas for how my weaving-research can stretch in the midst of social-distancing were so helpful. Here's to transforming not just historical narratives around Indigenous weaving practice, but to materializing hand- and heart-knowledges that can enter into and restructure conversations around BIWOC experience. Salud!” -Kira Dominguez Hultgren

“t’s a Process, a series of acrylic on canvas paintings examines societal standards of beauty related to black women. I was inspired to create my current body of work on Black hair in response to the discrimination and chastising experience of many black women and girls in spaces such as the workplace or schools. The women in my life and from my community inspired many of the paintings within this series. While some of the works draw from my personal experiences which correlate to the subjects in my paintings. The paintings show the beauty and versatility of these hairstyles and highlight the significance of hair in Black culture, while also highlighting these intimate experiences and routines of daily life.” -Jessica Spence

“I wanted to thank you both so much for organizing the virtual studio visits and for thinking of me. I'd love to pass on my deep thanks to Marcela as well for her time, attention, and recommendations - I haven't had much opportunity to talk about or think through this work and my work has felt 3,000 miles away as we try to organize as students and deal with higher admin. It was so amazing to return to this kind of conversation and share something instead of focusing on organizing and administrative activities, which have completely taken over. ” -Christina Barrera

Artist Amanda Brown
“I am always thinking about scale as a way of engaging the viewer in a physical, bodily act of looking. Many of my paintings are large, measuring over seven feet tall. In order to see the paintings, the viewer must move around, get close and then step back. More recently, however, after moving to a smaller studio and when working from home, I’ve begun painting on smaller surfaces and the question of scale has shifted to: how can I affect a sense of breadth and scale within the limits of this canvas or piece of paper? Scale becomes less about the size of the surface, and more about what's happening in the image.” -Amanda Brown
