POWRPLNT

June 24 – September 5, 2015

From June 24 through September 4, 2015, Hunter East Harlem Gallery was transformed into a teen-focused pop-up education center and lounge, called POWRPLNT, with computers, plants, and NYC-based digital artists teaching free weekly classes to local teens. The summer-long educational project is a digital art laboratory and workshop for teens founded by artist Angelina Dreem and installed its 3rd incarnation of the project at Hunter East Harlem Gallery.

For the installation at HEHG, POWRPLNT teamed up with artists Deanna Havas, Rodan Tekle, David Van Witt, Hunter College IMA MFA students, among others to provide free technology classes for local teens. Classes include making sound installations, learning how to paint digitally, and sculpting aliens in 3D software.

On Saturdays, POWRPLNT hosted all ages workshops focused on artistic development like “Girls Only Video Diary” by journalist Whitney Mallet, “Passion Management” taught by AHBS producer Alberto Arensberg, “Intro to Copyright Law” by Parka Records founder Anibal Luque.

The two-month installation featured an exhibition component with student work being rotated throughout the digital gallery. The opening on June 24th presented video collages from artists Sam Rolfes, Yulan Grant, Samantha Cornwell, and Giguel Maybach and textiles by Nandi Loaf with a performance by Prince Harvey. The project culminated in a group exhibition of the teen artwork displayed on the gallery walls. Classes were taught by Hunter College IMA MFA students and leading NYC-based digital artists. Outreach was made to East Harlem high school students, Museum Teen Summit, Union Settlement, and tours/teaching opportunities for PS7 students.
